Call for papers: Key Changes: Transitions in our Students, Our Classrooms, Ourselves September 24-25, 2010 Charlottetown, PE This year's Atlantic Teaching Showcase 2010 conference will be at UPEI, and we'd like to draw your attention to a few things:
1) This year's conference is earlier than in previous years--the last weekend in September (coinciding with the PEI Jazz Festival!). We're hoping that having the conference earlier will make regional travel more pleasant and mean that the conference doesn't coincide with mid-terms or heavy marking. We also know that PEI is particularly lovely at this time of year, so hope that people will want to bring their families for the weekend, and a last kick at summer.
2) We're experimenting with a couple of other changes this year, too. In the hopes of having more presentations without increasing the number of concurrent sessions, we're making all sessions 25 minutes in length. We've also added a final plenary that will showcase a number of quick teaching tips--called the "Furious Five" (see the attached call for more information about this). Finally, we're planning to begin the conference on Friday afternoon, with a series of optional workshops (stay tuned), followed by the keynote speaker and a reception. This means that the full day on Saturday can be devoted to presentations; it also means that we have a built-in opportunity to socialize and connect with each other. 3) We're really pleased to announce that our keynote speaker is Dr. Ajay Heble who not only teaches in the Department of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, but who is also the Artistic Director of the Guelph Jazz Festival. Currently, Ajay heads an interdisciplinary, international, SSHRC-funded project called "Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice" that "explores musical improvisation as a model for social change" (http://www.improvcommunity.ca/). Ajay will kick off the conference by connecting jazz, improv, and pedagogy.
If you have any questions, please contact us (Shannon Murray, Conference Chair; or Sue Dawson and Jane Magrath Programme Committee Chairs) at: showcase@upei.ca
We hope to see you in September :) Sincerely, Sue and Jane
